Understanding Trauma

Every student has a story. Too often we focus just on the behavior in front of us, and forget the person behind the behavior. This session provides an overview of childhood trauma, with an emphasis on how trauma affects the brain, development, and behavior. Staff will walk away with practical strategies to make their classrooms safe and supportive for students who have experienced trauma.

In this session, participants will...

  • Learn the dramatic effect trauma has on the developing brain

  • Understand and learn to avoid well-intentioned, but accidentally harmful classroom techniques

  • Develop strategies to foster a safe and supportive classroom environment for students who have been through the worst.
